Mechanism of Action
SS-31 selectively binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid uniquely found in the inner mitochondrial membrane. This interaction stabilizes cristae structure and optimizes the organization of electron transport chain complexes, particularly at the interface of cytochrome c and Complex III/IV supercomplexes. By modulating the cardiolipin-cytochrome c interaction, SS-31 influences electron transfer efficiency and mitochondrial membrane potential without acting as a conventional antioxidant scavenger.
